Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost: the origins

The Silver Ghost was born in 1906. Presented in two examples at the Olympia Hall show in London, it was barely finished and would not be truly completed until 1907. The original model, known as the “40/50 hp”, was first produced in the Manchester workshops, then in the Derby factory in 1908.

At the time, Henry Royce's goal was to build a car with a powerful, ultra-quiet engine. And he succeeded. The Silver Ghost's quiet operation and smooth ride are its main characteristics, which also explain its nickname, "Silver Ghost." Its quiet operation, combined with its aluminum body and silver trim, clearly justifies this name!

Obsessed with quality and detail, Henry Royce made a difference in an automotive world populated by noisy, sputtering vehicles. This is how the Silver Ghost became a benchmark and acquired an elite reputation among a very wealthy clientele. The first model was even purchased by King Leopold II of Belgium.

Features of the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost

Equipped with a six-cylinder engine producing 48 horsepower, the Silver Ghost was also known for its aluminum frame, which reduced its weight and consequently improved its performance. Its engine was revised and enlarged to 7.4 liters in the 1910s, but this wasn't the only area to undergo modifications and improvements. The braking system was also redesigned over the years. In the early years, given the vehicle's weight, the braking system proved inadequate. Therefore, in 1913, drum brakes were gradually fitted, first on the rear wheels and then on all wheels with a power-assisted system.

In terms of design, Henry Royce's penchant for perfection is once again evident . Boasting an elegant and sophisticated body, the Silver Ghost was prized for its polished silver finish and exquisite wood details. But above all, each model was personalized to the owner's preferences, making the vehicle truly unique. It's important to remember that the Silver Ghost was primarily intended for the aristocracy and wealthy of the era. Inside, high-quality leather upholstered the seats, while the interior panels were crafted from carved wood. The dashboard also reflected luxury and comfort, featuring instruments of exceptional precision for its time.

The Silver Ghost through the years

Beauty, speed, silence, comfort… The Silver Ghost was the epitome of perfection in its day! Not to mention the vehicle's exceptional level of technical reliability! In fact, the original, over 100 years old, is still in perfect working order and, get this, has over 920,000 kilometers on the odometer!

These features explain the vehicle's rapid success and the fact that this silver ghost appealed to both royalty and high-ranking officers. Indeed, during the First World War, it served as a staff car and even acted as an ambulance!

From 1921, the Springfield factory in Massachusetts produced the American version of the Silver Ghost. And in the mid-1920s, despite its qualities, it gave way to the New Phantom, which succeeded it in 1925. But the Silver Ghost wasn't finished yet. In 1964, it appeared in Gérard Oury's film *Le Corniaud* (The Sucker). Today, prized by collectors, it is featured in numerous automobile museums, and its legacy lives on.
